Cold Steel

Cold Steel President Lynn C Thompson’s passion for knife-training is well known by all of his customers. A lifelong Martial Artist who still trains martial arts at least 16 hours a week, he has dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge pertaining to the combative application of the blade. From his lectures and demonstrations at the Soldier of Fortune conventions and the Gunsite Academy Edged Weapons Symposiums of the 80’s and 90’s, to his present day training of members of our nation’s military and law enforcement - he has shared his knowledge and experience with some of our nation's most honored and respected tactical experts, and the most common question that they ask, time and time again is "Mr. Thompson, what knife do YOU carry?" As the designer of many of Cold Steel's most memorable blades and the lead designer of their in-house R&D department, Lynn often switches out between different knives. But one blade has remained a constant favorite of his ever since its initial development over 20 years ago – the Vaquero! With its long, wide undulating blade shape, the Thompson Voyager with its Vaquero style blade has the broad belly and sweeping curves of a kukri, but also the prominent piercing tip of a dagger. Fully serrated, with Cold Steel's signature "grip n’ rip" serration pattern for shearing through tough, fibrous material, the Vaquero is not only a great choice when working with thick rope or abrasive mediums, but a devastatingly effective self-defense tool. This signature edition Thompson Voyager is strictly limited to 2000 pieces. Each one is numbered, with a laser-engraved signature on the blade. Featuring the pioneering Tri-Ad lock for added strength, an expertly heat treated American CTS-XHP powdered steel blade, chosen for its ability to take and hold an incredibly fine edge, and a DLC (Diamond Like) coated for superior scratch resistance, the Signature Edition Thompson Voyager is sure to be a proud addition to your collection!

Wicked Blade—More Teeth than a Junkyard Dog
I wish Lynn wouldn’t write his name on my knife. What, was Lynn’s mommy afraid he’d lose his little knifey at summer camp? On the bright side, if you ever have to throw-down, the cops will be looking for Lynn C Thompson. Seriously though, Thompson Limited Edition XL Voyager Vaquero is a great knife design, and Mr. Thompson has a right to be proud. If your duty/occupation/recreation/inclination takes you into the, “Valley of the Shadow of Death,” this knife riding back-up in your pocket will help give you confidence to fear no evil. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I went with this version of Vaquero, over the AUS 10 stainless version (roughly = to 440C, N695, 9CR18MoV). I sure like CTS-XHP for its balance of: edge retention, relative ease of sharpening, toughness, and stain resistant properties. Since Thompson Limited Edition XL Voyager Vaquero is limited to a run of 2,000, this knife has collector’s potential. I received # 1215, so if you’re considering it, there are probably not that many left. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vaquero is a lot handier and more agile in the hand than a XL Espada; probably very similar to a large Espada, with a similar grip style. The serrated Vaquero blade makes an excellent tac tool with its hooking recurve. But, I think the plain edge version would make a fine folding survival/bushcraft back-up knife; it being essentially, a mini Kukri. Arrived sharp, but, I’m not sure how you’re supposed to sharpen this, “rip n grip,” serrated edge. A little more complicated than a Spyder edge. Handle is comfortable, grippy, and controllable. Opens easily, locks-up and releases well. Not as heavy as it looks, balanced and nimble in the hand. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> If you don’t mind carrying a large folder, there are few knives at any price that give more confidence and peace of mind, than Thompson Limited Edition XL Voyager Vaquero (Disclaimer: not a substitute for awareness and training). Getting late; it’s 1215. Do you know where your Thompson Voyager is?

Thompson LE XL Voyager Vaquero
Excellent quality. Would be a great defensive blade, but this one was bought as a gift and will be saved as a collectible. Great value for the price, always a pleasure doing business with the KnifeCenter.

Amazing Knife...Best Voyager!
This thing tears through clothing and flesh. It feels great in the hand and thwacks open much easier than it's Recon and Talwar XL bretheren. The clip is a bit tight, but that's the only problem I can think of.
