SNOW12: Hudson Bay Camping Axe
Snow & Nealley

If you can handle the weight, an axe is one of those tools you'd trade many others for in a survival situation. It can perform all the duties of a good saw, large fixed blade, and a small survival knife. If sharpened correctly it can also feather a stick and create some extremely fine kindling. This is one of those axes that can do all this and more. It measures 23" overall with an American hickory wood handle. The 6.75" carbon steel axe head has a 3.75" blade and is superbly attached - that sucker isn't going anywhere. It has an extremely nice feeling whether you're holding an inch away from the head or an inch away from the butt end - it's just very well balanced. Of course it's got a hammer pommel on the other side of the axe for banging in tent pegs and the entire package weighs 2.95 pounds with the leather blade guard.

Current product made in the USA.
This axe company was purchased several years ago and production moved back to America. Researched and found the head is forged in America, then finished and the hickory handle set in Smyrna, Maine. The head is stamped USAOn mine, the handle was well set and tight. The bit is straight and perfectly in line with the handle. The handle isn’t heartwood like my Wetterlings, but has nice grain orientation. All I had to do was sand off the varnish and give a few coats of boiled linseed oil. Also removed the finish from the bit and sharpened it. The steel felt reasonably hard during sharpening, but I haven’t worked it hard yet. It’s a chopper more then a splitter but should work great at a campsite. Great size for the trunk or strapped to a backpack frame. Glad I purchased this excellent smaller axe.

Axe head is made in China
This is not a truly American made axe. It's axe head is made on China. At best it is assembled in America from parts made in other countries. Steel in axe head is unknown. A truly America axe of any quality paying decent wages would be in the 150-200 dollar range. Bait and switch

Great American product
The head is a well finished forging, the handle has a good grain pattern and finish. With minimal work the edge will be perfect. I like to hike, camp, and canoe and this is the perfect size and weight for all but the most minimalist trips.
