CS80PSSKXL: 80PSSKXL Shanghai Warrior

Cold Steel

Cold Steel President Lynn C Thompson has been fascinated with Chinese Double Edged Daggers for many years. The Shanghai Shadow remains one of his favorite double edged knives and he trains with it often, both as a stand-alone weapon and as a companion to a hatchet or sword breaker.

Sparring has always been a big part of Lynn's design process and he often says that many of his "what if" moments happen in the gym. It was in one such training session that Lynn had a thought - What if the Shanghai Shadow was as big as a bowie knife?

This question led to numerous prototypes that eventually became what Cold Steel began to refer to as the Shanghai Master.

At 16" long, the Shanghai Master is as big as many bowie knives, but with the advantage of a super wide, double edged cutting blade.

Its solid full tang blade is continuously curved top and bottom for maximum cutting and slashing potential with either edge, with a reinforced central spine to add stiffness and rigidity to the point.

Its sturdy steel ring allows deft manipulation between grips, making it incredibly fast and lively in the hand, and its removable high impact polypropylene scales make it remarkably comfortable to hold and use.

The Shanghai Masters massive blade is safely contained within a versatile and adaptable Secure-Ex sheath for ease of carry in virtually any pack or gear configuration.

Shanghai Warrior definitely a Superb Fighting Knife
The Shanghai Warrior is a great great followup to its smaller brother Shanghai Shadow. The Shanghai Shadow follows a form of knife used for fighting in China back in the early 20th Century, so the Warrior is definitely a "Fighting Knife". It's double edged and over 9 inch long blade is sharp! I would feel sufficiently armed with a Shanghai Warrior in an urban or a wood lot setting. One could remove the handle scales and put the Warrior onto a staff and make a deadly spear out of it too. I did exactly that with the CS Warhead a few years back and now have a deadly boar hunting spear. The Warrior would make a fantastic fighting spear by fastening it onto a white waxwood staff. I would cut a groove into the staff and slip the handle into the groove and drill and fasten it with bolts.I urge Cold Steel's Lynn Thompson to make and build a Shanghai Warrior with a polished steel finish with more emphasis on the handle and guard. The handle can be a wrapped non slip grip with a better guard that has finished edges. Of course, the upgrades will cost more, but I and probably everyone will be willing to pay more for a better made Warrior. Now that Taiwan has friendly commerce with US, this is the ideal time to get it made. I hope this message gets to Lynn Thompson.

Cowabunga, Dude!
I’m not sure I fully understand this knife. The handle of Shanghai Warrior seems small in diameter, and the scales are slick in the hand. I believe this is purposeful; from the description above, it seems you’re supposed to dazzle your adversary w/B.S. (your ninja knife whirling skills), like the sword twirling assassin in the market place, before Indiana Jones takes him out with his revolver. Seriously, this knife would probably be impressive in the hands of a skilled martial artist. It’s pearls before swine, with me; and looks like a visit to the E.R. Maybe I could just dazzle my opponent with a magic trick. Pull a Quarter out of his ear, or, something. So, I wrapped the handle in black athletic tape (may add handle bar tape hump in center of grip), and made “just a knife” out of it. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to use that thumb ring, either. When I stick my thumb in it in ice pick grip, the blade’s side (not edges), are facing my adversary. ??? Not for gripping; must be just for twirling. Index finger is awkward in the ring, too; unlike TOPS Knive’s excellent mid-sized tactical fixed, C.U.T. 4.0 w/index finger ring (available @ KnifeCenter.com). Shanghai Warrior’s ring makes a nice pommel, though. You could drive it in the ground and hitch your horse to it. I imagine there’s a Cold Steel DVD on the subject that would be enlightening, and a rubber training knife. I’ll probably just remain an ignorant pilgrim. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shanghai Warrior’s blade is impressive, with its nice long compound saber grinds, with about a 23-25 degree edge. This is my first Cold Steel in SK5. Arrived sharp. Weight forward balance, with fulcrum about 2” ahead of guard. Knife seems heavy in sheath, but a much lighter feel when grasped in the hand. Doesn’t seem cumbersome/clumsy, for a knife this size. Secure-Ex sheath is fine, serves its purpose, good retention, needs a clean-out/drain hole (have to drill it yourself). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I think I’ll drip some beef blood on the sheath and hang this thing in the guest bathroom downstairs. Nothing says, “You’ve overstayed your welcome,” like a bloody Shanghai Warrior hanging from the towel rack, like you were butchering things in the bath tub. Could be just the thing, for those stubborn, “don’t know when to leave” relatives. Shanghai Warrior is definitely one to have in your collection. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> P.S. Hey, Cold Steel, if you made the inner diameter of the ring pommel several millimeters smaller, you could open a beer with it, and it would become a highly functional multi-tool, sought after by soldiers, sailors, and civilians the world over. You could call it, “Drink’n’Dice.” I’d give it 6 Stars.

Great Knife! Great Price!
This knife is superb and very underrated. It's an exceptional tool and weapon, especially for outdoors. Buyers should understand the Warrior is not only larger than the Shanghi Shadow (its little brother), is much heavier. The Shadow also makes an excellent weapon in urban environs, while the Warrior is an excellent outdoor companion. The price is great, the sheath is well designed and the Warrior is a superb product.Pick up a couple!
