SP101GPBN2: C101GPBN2 Manix 2 Brown M390

This incredible expression of the best-selling Manix 2 combines all the proven features of the standard version with a blade ground from state-of-the-art Bohler M390 stainless steel. Through a powdered metallurgy process, they produce M390 Microclean steel which is highly sought and well suited to today's high-performance cutlery. M390 is a martensitic chromium steel highly resistant to corrosion. The powdered granules of Chromium and Vanadium in the steel are small, consistently sized, and finely dispersed in the steel's matrix (mix) making it exceptionally homogenous. This means for the consumer cutting with M390 will experience a high-level wear and corrosion resistance and the blade steel can be polished to a mirror-like finish.

The leaf-shaped profile of the Manix 2's blade provides a long, gently curved cutting edge and a sturdy, utilitarian point. For maximum control, it features a forefinger choil and a thumb ramp with strategic jimping (textured grooves) that allow a forward-positioned grip during detailed cutting tasks. The 14mm Trademark Round Hole proudly announces the knife's Spyderco pedigree and makes one-handed deployment with either hand swift and positive.

Built on a framework of full skeletonized stainless steel liners, the Manix 2's handle is capped with textured brown G10 scales. To ensure convenient carry and instant access, the handle includes a reversible spring steel clip that mounts to either side of the handle butt for ambidextrous tip-up carry. It also features an oversized lined lanyard hole for easy attachment of fobs and lanyards.

Linking the blade and handle is Spyderco's patented Ball Bearing Lock mechanism. This high-strength lock consists of a ball bearing nested within a durable textured polymer "cage." When the blade is opened, a compression spring drives the cage forward to wedge the ball bearing between a ramp on the blade tang and the steel frame anchored between the handle halves. Drawing the caged ball bearing to the rear releases the lock and allows the blade to close smoothly while keeping your fingers safely away from the sharp edge.

Good Knife, buy You Can Make it Great.
The Spyderco Manix 2 G10 in M390 is a very good knife, but if you make a couple mods you can make this a great knife. 1) The internal spring that operates the ball bearing locking system is too stiff for me from the factory. The stiff spring makes this knife difficult to close with one hand. Fortunately, McMaster-Carr sells a spring that is the exact save size as the factory spring, but it is slightly less stiff. The McMaster replacement part is #1986K46. 2) The plastic ball cage works OK, but it just feels cheap and plastic. Fortunately, Flytanium makes replacement ball cages in various metals and colors. 3) Some say replacing the stainless steel ball with a ceramic ball makes the knife smoother. I put in a ceramic ball but, I did not see any difference in the action. However if you want to go ceramic, the McMaster part is #9576K32. It is a 3/16" diameter ball.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Lock Type, Handle Material, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Ease of Opening, Handle Feel, Weight, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material
Cons: None
My first Spyderco. Was really on the fence between this and a Para 2, but really dig the brown G10 and the M390 sealed the deal. Ordered Tuesday night and haven’t put it down since receiving this Friday morning. Immediately put it through the paces clearing a stack of cardboard before testing on dinner prep. This beast diced and sliced mushroom, tomato, onion and fresh herbs like a champ. Thought my kitchen knives were sharp, but the Manix embarassed the hell out of ‘em. While this might be my first Spyderco, it won’t be my last.
